2012 Debut Author Challenge

2012 is nearly upon us so I've decided to join the 2012 Debut Author challenge, hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren, for the 1st time ever! There are soo many books to choose from that it literally took me a whole day to figure out which ones to use for the challenge and this is what I came up with:

  1. Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood
  2. Incarnate by Jodi Meadows
  3. Everneath by Brodi Ashton
  4. Tempest by Julie Cross
  5. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
  6. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
  7. Above by Leah Bobet
  8. Queen of the Glass by Sarah J. Maas
  9. Of Poseidon by Anna Banks
  10. Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins
  11. Fracture by Megan Miranda
  12. The Alchemy of forever by Avery Williams
  13. Article 5 by Kirsten Simmons
  14. Elemental by Emily White
  15. Slide by Jill Hathaway.
I chose only 15 as I didn't want to over do it on my 1st time doing a challenge and I thought that it was a realistic number for me. As time goes on i'll link up the reviews I do here.

If you still haven't signed up yet do it now over at The Story Siren.

The Unbecoming Of Mara Dyer By Michelle Hodkins

Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Release Date: September 27th 2011
Series: Book 1

Synopsis from Goodreads:
Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.
She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.
She's wrong.
My Review:   (review contains a bit of bad language)
This book blew my mind! It was intense, it was shocking, it was everything a great book should be and more and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a book with a mega creepy factor and a suspense filled thriller.
The unbecoming of Mara Dyer left me reeling countless time with it's plot twists ans turns and it's unwavering ability to leave me confused, breathless and with a generally WTF is going on feeling and I love every second of it. It's one of those books that you really can't explain to anyone because YOU yourself STILL don't know what's going on even after you've finished the book. Some people may not like that but I loved it, it's so rare in books these days and so unique that it worked for me. The whole book felt like just the beginning of one mega book, which I think is the feeling Hodkins was going for since at the end of the novel it says end of volume 1 (which I take as vol 1 of the whole book, you know what I mean?) instead of book 1.
I could go on and on about how awesome the plot of this book was but I really wouldn't get anywhere as I have no idea where to begin and what to say that won't spoil anything, so all I'm going to say is that it is definitely different, definitely awesome and definitely sexy in places! In simple words this book rocked my world.
Ahhh the character, something I can actually talk about with some semblance of an actual thought. The character where a huge factor to why I loved this book. Every single person in this book I believed, every last one of them could have been someone I know and I loved that, it made it all the more real for me. I adored how Mara's family where all a huge part of the book and where actively involved in her life. Way to many YA books don't have the family involved at all, which really isn't realistic and not true to teen life. That was a big plus for me and made the book all the more relatable.
Mara was amazing she wasn't one of those 'i'll waif for the guys to come and save me' she was hardcore and kick-ass and someone I'd love to know and have around (well except for that one thing right? lol).
Noah Shaw (insert sigh) where to begin! That boy has skill, hotness and all around awesomeness coming from every pore on his hot body. Throughout the whole book he was smooth, clever, witty, unkempt, caring and have I mentioned hot! I could toot this guys horn all day ;) but i'll stop there before the review becomes x rated. If you don't read this book for any other reason but for Noah Shaw then it's a mighty fine reason in my eyes.
The tension between Mara and Noah was great, just the right amount to keep you wanting more and to sigh out loud when you thought something was about to happen but it didn't. I loved them together the way they spoke to each other the insults everything. they kept each other balanced.
A minor character I LOVED was Jamie with his all around coolness and his witty awesome lines such as "A certain unkempt bastard with a panty-dropping simle?" that kept me laughing and smiling pages after said line. There sound have been sooo much more of him but hopefully in the next installment he'll be more involved.
Mara's brothers Daniel and Joseph were amazing, you could tell from the get go how much these 3 cared for one another. Daniel melted my heart with his worrisome ways and his protectiveness and Joseph made me laugh out loud with his 'networking' and his 'stock' as his young age. I'm so glad they where involved through out the story and hope they still are in the next book.
The way these characters interact with each other was so well written and though out that at times it felt like they where real people and could actually have been in the room with me.
Well i'll stop my rambling so you can all go out and buy this book now if you haven't already because this book is awesome and filled with crazy and down right scary in places so go read and I'll leave you all with a parting sentence: WTF was that ending!! I cannot wait till next year to find out what happens, it's too much suspense for me to handle!

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spin, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Ok so my waiting on Wednesday pick this week is the Up and coming novel The Mephisto Covenant by Trinity Faegen! Not only does it sounds amazing, but that cover is simply to die for! So beautiful. I love how covers these days are a piece of art.

The expected publication date is September 2011 and I cannot wait! I would sell my soul to get a copy of this book before hand ;) haha.

The synopsis I found for this book is short and sweet, but doesn't half get you excited for the release:

Sasha is desperate to find out who murdered her father. When getting
the answer means pledging her soul to Eryx, she unlocks a secret that
puts her in grave danger—Sasha is Anabo, a daughter of Eve, and
Eryx’s biggest threat.

A son of Hell, immortal, and bound to Earth forever, Jax looks
for redemption in the Mephisto Covenant—God’s promise he will find
peace in the love of an Anabo. After a thousand years, he’s finally
found the girl he’s been searching for: Sasha.

With the threat of Eryx looming, Jax has to keep Sasha safe and
win her over. But can he? Will Sasha love him and give up her mortal
life?

Amazing? Yep I thought so too!

What's your "waiting on" pick this week?

Follow Friday #4

NOW FOR THE FOLLOW FUN!

This weeks question is:
Do you have anyone that you can discuss books with IRL? Tell us about him/her.

Unfortunately I don't really have anyone to discuss books with IRL =[ that's mainly the reason why I started my blog in the first place, to be able to discuss books with people that are interested in YA lit. I mean I can talk to my Mum and Dad about the books, but my dad's more into classics that YA lol. My Mum actually does like YA and has been reading some of my books, so she will sit there and listen to me ramble on and on about a book. She does also want to read the books after I've gone on about them for ages, so that's a plus =].

To join the fun and make now book blogger friends, just follow these simple rules:

  1. (Required) Follow the Follow My Book Blog Friday Host { Parajunkee.com} and any one else you want to follow on the list
  2. (Required) Follow our Featured Bloggers - http://romance-around-the-corner.blogspot.com/
  3. Put your Blog name & URL in the Linky thing.
  4. Grab the button up there and place it in a post, this post is for people to find a place to say hi in your comments
  5. Follow Follow Follow as many as you can, as many as you want, or just follow a few. The whole point is to make new friends and find new blogs. Also, don't just follow, comment and say hi. Another blogger might not know you are a new follower if you don't say "HI"
  6. If someone comments and says they are following you, be a dear and follow back. Spread the Love...and the followers
  7. If you're new to the follow friday hop, comment and let me know, so I can stop by and check out your blog!

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent (ARC)
Written by: Veronica Roth
Series: Book 1
Published: Out on the 3rd May 2011 by Harper Collins

Synopsis from goodread:
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

My Review:
AMAZING! This book kept me up all night trying to figure out where it was going to go. I found myself saying ‘ok just this last chapter and I’ll go to bed’ but after every single chapter I couldn’t bring myself to put it down! I lost countless hours of sleep to this book, but every single one was worth it. This book comes with a huge recommendation from me, but also a warning to younger readers. This book contains a lot of violence, not for the faint hearted, but the author hasn’t just written it in for violence sake, every act was done for a reason which I loved about this book.

Veronica Roth has created a spectacular dystopian world that I could not get enough of; its beautifully written and exceptionally well thought out. The whole idea of the Factions and the names of each one is pure genius. I love how I actually chose my own Faction before the book really got started, I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done this. Each and every one of them fascinated me beyond belief and I found myself actually searching the words to find their actual meaning, giving the Factions even more depth.

Roth’s writing is extremely descriptive and flows so well that the book is over in a flash. It’s actually hard to believe that this is a debut novel with how well written it is. Everything that she has written has been written for a purpose and not just thrown in as a filler. This novel contains so much that it’s impossible to talk about all in a single review without giving anything away. The main themes in this book is the decisions we have to make as individuals and the consequences they have to us and others, betrayals that we may or may not have seen coming and an unexpected romance (I adore the fact that this is actually a sort of side plot, not the main one).

The characters for me are the huge winners; they are what made the book spectacular for me. Tris is one of the best protagonists I have ever read. She starts of as a weak, quite girl but grows into a strong brave woman at just 16. I felt everything she felt throughout the novel which made it even better for me. Another character I adored is Four, Tris’ mentor; he is so complex that even at the end of the novel you just know he has so many more layers we are yet to find out. His character development was phenomenal! I did not expect the direction his character was going in at all.

There are so many other characters that we are introduce to that you would believe it to be easily confusing but surprisingly Roth pulls it off remarkably well that we are never left wondering who the character is. Every single character has faults and imperfections which in my eyes only make them more believable and interesting, making the novel outstanding. I felt myself empathise with many characters, feeling sorry for them, hating and loving the people in this book. It was such an emotional ride which I loved every second of.

The ending of this book was everything I wanted and more! It was action packed, with fighting and death, heartbreaking and in a way heart warming and led nicely into a sequel. This novel left me thinking about it for days afterwards; I just could not get it out of my head! I highly highly recommend getting this book AS soon as it comes out! You will not be disappointed at all.

As a last note I’d like to say again that this book contains a lot of violence not for the younger reader.
